What is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation?

TMS as a treatment

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a painless and non-invasive neuromodulation technique. TMS directs a magnetic pulse through the intact skull bone to stimulate the underlying brain tissue. The magnetic pulse induces a current flow that activates the neurons close to the surface either facilitating or inhibiting their function depending on the protocol.

For treatment of depression TMS works by impacting neural activity to the areas of the brain which are dysregulated in individuals who suffer from depression. For treatment to be effective TMS is required to be provided daily 5 days per week over a 6 week period. The sessions for TMS can be provided in approximately 20 or 40 minutes dependent on individual needs.

TMS is funded under the Medical Benefits Scheme (MBS) for treatment of depression only. TMS can also be used as a treatment for a number of other illnesses including but not limited to PTSD, anxiety, chronic pain, and insomnia, but these conditions are not covered under the MBS and are only available via private funding.
